Books! Books! Bookssss! Do you love books? What kind of books do you read? Let's discuss!
Recently I've been noticing that my preferred "genre" is basically ~imperfect women~. Women who are flawed, differ (morally, psychologically, emotionally etc.) from our standard, say, Jane Austen heroine who is usually very moral and though layered imho not very complicated. A perfect example of that is probably Mrs. Dalloway... Needless to say Virginia Woolf is my favourite author because beside her writing about my favourite flawed women she was also one herself ^o^
What are your favourite books?

I used to read a ton of Victorian stuff as well as Douglas Adams and whatever random books I found in the school library... I also love a particular sci-fi author, Robert J. Sawyer.
right now I'm in the process of reading all the books in A Song of Ice and Fire. I'm almost done with the second :3

I like horror and suspense novels. I've also been getting into medical thrillers lately. :3 I'm always looking for recommendations, cause sometimes it gets boring reading the same things over and over, lol.

Oooh I love sci-fi too, I'll check out that author! I think my favourite sci-fi author is Philip K. Dick but IDK I haven't read a huge amount of sci-fi yet ^o^
Have you read The Secret History by Donna Tart, yet becca? I read it in, like, a day. I started because I couldn't sleep and then I just didn't sleep until I finished it *_*. So idk that's a suspense novel for me, certainly!
Oh and I recommend H.P. Lovecraft for horror of course!

Haha, I love Jane Austen myself but that's precisely the reason why Emma will always be my favourite.
My major is basically English literature so that's what I read most. I'm also really into children's literature, fantasy & science-fiction. Once I'm done with uni I'd love to read some more authors from all over the world, because right now I'm kind of limited to English-speaking ones.
During the school year (eg. right now) most of my reading is for uni. At the moment I'm reading for: - my master thesis, that I'm writing on women writers in American science-fiction magazines in the 1920s/30s. None of those authors are well-known nowadays though XD. - a course on Canadian literature, I have to read The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood (I was a bit bummed you gave it a bad review on goodreads, froufox, because I was looking forward to finally reading some Atwood XD) & Fall on your knees by Ann-Marie Macdonald next.

Blegh, why is that the book you have to read for school? She has written far better things! I really really enjoyed Oryx and Crake not long before I read the Handmaid's Tale and it's so so obvious that the latter is purely sensationalist and SO SO 2nd wave feminist and thus very very lacking in any decent points to be made about women. Maybe you'll like it because it's only your first Atwood novel IDK? But her books read ver easy and smooth (The Handmaid's Tale less though? XD) so at least it'll be over soon haha. Ugh.
Why women sci-fi writers in that period of time, Skooter? ^o^
I haven't really read any fantasy but Harry Potter & Gormenghast? XD But I want to try to read some though!

Haha, okay, well, I'll make sure to read some of her other novels later ^o^.
Because you need a promotor for a thesis so basically I needed a subject matter that interested me as well as one of the professors/assistants, & this is what it turned out to be XDD. I'm pretty pleased though, because it suits my fields of interest (sci-fi, women writers, gender) but it's also something that I knew nothing about beforehand so everything I learn feels new & interesting.
I'm hoping I get around to reading Gormenghast someday soon *_*. 90% of the fantasy I read is Diana Wynne Jones, because I'm obsessed with her. I've also read Harry Potter, some Tolkien & Lewis, Neil Gaiman... Odi, what are some of your favourite fantasy authors/books?

But it's not necessary, I'm pretty sure we have the English trilogy in our family library somewhere ^^. Actually, the first part is on my shelves already.

I've actually heavily cut back on purchasing books and am considering purging most of my current library - I just feel like it's such a hassle? If I knew I could just put them somewhere and never have to move them again it would be less bothersome.
Now watch me throw out exactly zero books because I love all of them too much haaaaaa

I cleaned out my bookcase a few weeks ago and figured I'd get rid of a lot of stuff I didn't even like that much and put them aside to take to the charity shop but then I just kind of accidentally kept putting them back in my bookcase???

omgggg i adore my kindle so much! i bought one two years ago and it was one of my most beloved things but several weeks ago i SAT on it D; but because i love it so much i promptly bought a new one and haven't regretted it since <3 it's such a democratic tool imho, i download a lot of books illegally but i delete them after so the internet is like a library for me (i'd totes pay a yearly fee for it but those kinds of things are not available here). it just let's people access so many knowledge and ideas for little money and that makes me so happy i could talk forever about it ;____________________________;

yeah! one of my favorite ways to find things is off sites, like fkb.me, that aggregate a bunch of books available for free each day on amazon. it's nothing bestselling, but I've grabbed a lot of interesting historical/nonfiction things to read, plus some (fairly trashy, admittedly) fiction!
also for anything old enough to have an expired copyright, you could convert a PDF from the Project Gutenberg site to be readable on kindle!

oh gutenberg has kindle formats though! i recently realised that there are some books that have expired copyright or something on archive.org that gutenberg doesn't have too! & i've found that a lot of pdfs read really well on my kindle actually! it hurts to think that i've wasted two years by believing pdfs were horrendous on it ;_; of course it depends on the layout though... i'll check out that site too, yayy!!! i usually just torrent things though ^o^

I was really lucky to get this subject because everything any other promotor does is basically canon literature which I love but also have been seeing in class for like 5 years now so I reaaally don't want to spend another year studying it to death. and Winston, one day we're totes gonna top her family library and it'll be all our and OURS ALONE hahahahaaaa ~grabby hands~ How about we one day just aggregate my family library with all of yours and then we can live in a LAND OF BOOKS. & yes! On Project Gutenberg (and plenty of other sites) you can download .mobi formats, those can be read on Kindle too ^o^. I've yet to master the art of pdf reading though, you should show it to me someday Froufox XD.

Ohh, I didn't know Gutenberg does! I haven't actually used it for kindle stuff yet, so I didn't realize.
Hm, my actual kindle can't handle pdfs (it's a bit of an old model, maybe that's why?) but the app I use on my phone can do them, too :3 that's how I read novels for homework instead of buying them haha
