I was just thinking about starting up a thread along these lines earlier today! : D *~great minds think alike~*
I love cooking, and baking as well ^^ My grandmother raised me on all this amazing "commoner" food, and I've basically been trying to perfect her methods ever since. I also like the challenge of making something tasty on a small budget. What are some of your favourite recipes? Let's share ;D

I was thinking of making a thread about food too!! ;D I used to LOATHE cooking but when I was studying abroad I had no one to cook for me and occasionally made some food with the people who lived in my building and it turned out cooking can actually be fun?? XD So since then I mostly like to make food that my father refuses to make for me (my father is basically a cook and know how to cook so wel ughhh all fancy things and stuff ;_;). I've been pretty obsessed with japanese and korean food dramas so I've been trying to recreate some of those dishes as of late! I really adore the philosophy of love and caring for each other and your body behind its food because over here food is mostly about excess (although I do love that too obvs!). So anyway today I'm making this chinese-korean dish I saw on one of my fave youtube channels ^o^ It look pretty good and simple enough! Aside from regular meals with no clear recipe this is pretty much the only local dish I've made en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WaterzooiIt was really good! I'm kind of a great cook tbqh :'D

I've actually never tried making waterzooi myself, worst city representative everr : D What recipe did you use? And that tofu dish looks awesome but I'm kind of freaked out by the large quantity of oil she used - I wonder if it would still come out tasty using less *^* Will you let us know how it turned out?
A dish I've really been wanting to try and make is chili! I feel like it's such a common dish in the Americas, I'm really curious to try it. I've also been wanting to try and make cornbread, but my favourite American store's cornflour has been sold out for months now TT I just remember having really delicious cornbread as a child once, and it's been a dream to recreate that taste ever since (childhood nostalgia 101)

I adore waterzooi! I made this one and it was SO GOOD www.een.be/programmas/dagelijkse-kost/recepten/gentse-waterzooiI feel you really need to make it from scratch though, i.e. make the veg. stock yourself. Wait where did she use a lot of oil? I won't bother rewatching the vid because my internet is terrible D; I have really been wanting to make chili too! Ugh a friend made it in Switzerland and it was really really good! And really easy too apparently : D But it was with black beans and beef though (and lots and lots of chillies yummm). I think they have cornflour (maïsmeel?) in Delhaize too btw!

That looks fantastic, I'm getting a whole chicken the next time we do groceries so I can make this. The chef drives me nuts though, how many diminutives can you stuff into three minutes TT If any English speakers would like to try it, I found a pretty good version here :D www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/rachael-ray/waterzooi-de-poulet-recipe/index.html - I'd also be happy to translate the original for you Right at the beginning, she was like "add some oil for frying the vegetables" and dumped in a bucket of oil - but maybe I just feel that way because overly greasy dishes have been making me a little queasy lately I haven't seen a chili recipe with beef, but this one uses black beans - and thank you for the cornflour tip! There's no picture or item description on the site (typical :3) but I'm gonna go to one of their supermarkets soon and see if it's the right thing - thanks again <3

Oh yeah XD but the thing is the garlic, chili and ginger need to kind of stick and flavour the chicken, vegetables etc. and the oil does exactly that. It really doesn't make a dish greasy though I totes get how you feel, I constantly go through a phase like that.
But anyway I just made it and UGH IT WAS SO GOOOOOOOOOOOOOODDDDDD ;______________;
I added a cup and a half or so of fresh shiitake mushrooms (because my mom and I love a lot of vegetables and the carrots and onions just weren't cutting it) & I kept tasting it periodically and they worked SO WELL with the oyster sauce omfg ;_; though maybe a little boring because it kinda overpowered everything but then I added the sesame oil and I don't know how or why but that kind of pushed back the overwhelmingness of the oyster sauce and shiitake flavour and it gave the dish a lot of depth! Somehow the tofu kind of sucked up a lot of the ginger flavour too and that made is so refreshing with the kind of heavy-winter-taste of the shiitake & oyster sauce & walnuts you know what I mean? It was delicious! AAAAHHH. Definitely a dish I will remake for sure! I thought this was just gonna be kind of okay but not amazing kind of dish that was good enough to make once or twice but guess what I'm gonna make all throughout the winter?? (Because it's such a good winter dish with the walnuts and the shiitake and the oyster sauce! I'm def. gonna remember the shiitake and oyster sauce mix falvour for the future too!)
I also made brown quinoa, which kind of has a vague nutty flavour? I mostly made it because my mother's pasta-rice etc. cabinet is IMPOSSIBLE (seriously stuffed to the brim T-T) and it was the first thing I could grab and thought would be good and I'm really happy I got that because it was less overwhelming than any rice I love that I could think of and suited the dish perfectly ^O^
UGH can you tell I love food? XD

You are making that dish sound insanely good, jsyk ;-; I thought it was going to be a regular stir-fry, but now it sounds like heaven. And I know you're right about the oil absorbing flavours and sort of disappearing into the dish, I'm just in a weird mood
Also I couldn't resist and am making a half-baked version of the waterzooi, it's definitely not going to be as good as the traditional recipe but so far it smells delicious *^*

SAME I was totes drinking wine while cooking it and eating it though so I maybe be a little more enthused than needed but IDK I don't think so? ?? Yay half-baked waterzooi! Also I also hate that chef, ugh idek why, & last time i made waterzooi I totes didn't bother using a whole chicken because then I'd have to touch it and cut it and ewww gross and anyway it couldn't fit in the biggest pot I had at the time T-T so I just used two chicken breasts and extra vegetables and it was flawless : D

I don't like him because the way he uses our language makes it sound utterly dull and robs it of any of its natural moxie, like no, shush
I'm a very enthusiastic cook-an-entire-chicken-and-then-use-it-in-all-sorts-of-dishes-for-the-rest-of-the-week kind of person so I'm not opposed to cutting one up, but I only had chicken breasts in the house so I'm totally following in your footsteps ^^/ I normally never cook meat in water, because I think it makes it gross, but I just tasted a piece and it was tender and delicious - I think it might be important to make sure the water is hot before you put in the meat?

I wish I was that way, but maybe one day! : D
Cooking meat in water/stock really turned me off too but seriously the recipe is divine ^O^. Yeah, I think everything should be hot always; the pan when you put in the oil, the oil when you put in the spices, the spices (i.e. they should smell good) before you put in the meat/vegetables etc. I kind of feel very very uncomfortable when I see people doing it otherwise?? and I'm like NOOOOOOO this way the flavours won't come out as great and deep inside I cry while IRL I just silently nod or violently push the person away when telling them NO THIS IS NOT HOW IT'S DONE (depends on my mood & the food).

The only things I can cook are spaghetti and lasagna. Though when I do the lasagna, I do taco seasoning and stuff instead of tomato-based items. :3 I really should learn how to cook more items, but it's so difficult when the kitchen is so small. ;-;

I feel the dull knives & tiny kitchen so hard ;_; whenever I'm in an actual kitchen I'm so surprised by how easy things go because I don't have to wash pots in between cooking and I can actually cut things!!
I love the idea of taco seasoning instead of tomato-based items so much, idk what it entails really but I hate tomatos and taco stuff always sounds delicious. I wanna make tacos someday!
& Cilantro lime chicken sounds so delicious, Riako! *_*
How did your half-baked waterzooi turn out, Winston? : D

Mmm cilantro lime chicken really does sounds delicious. I'd add some chipotle sauce, because I love a nice spicy kick. I make dinner for my boyfriend every weeknight, and we cook together on the weekends. We make all sorts of things, but my favorites are probably chicken corn chowder (I don't really have a recipe...I make a bechamel sauce and throw in cooked potatoes and chicken, and a can of creamed corn and regular corn. It's simple and really tasty on a cold day) and Japanese Curry rice. I use this recipe : justhungry.com/japanese-beef-curry . It's soooo good, although it can be pretty time consuming.

Me and my sister (a r i e s) usually cook korean food and our favourite dish is bibimbap, it is delicious and quite spice if you chose to include dak galbi ( basicly chicken marrinated in chili paste, soya sauce, garlic, sesame oil and ginger, I don't think I missed anything). If you have not, you should definitely try it! Here is a link to a picture of bibimbap --> 3.bp.blogspot.com/-XdwgUEKNPWE/T6o37hHImEI/AAAAAAAANfU/ImXBIcqGM5U/s1600/Rice%2B-%2B5B.jpg

I'm lucky enough to live pretty close to an H-mart/korean BBQ, and I think Korean food might be my second favorite ethnic cuisine. It's always so delicious. I've only made beef bulbogi on my own, but dak galbi sounds pretty good, and I've got all those ingredients around my kitchen.

I also love to cook, even though I have a tiny kitchen at the moment. and no oven, only a little grill thing that would be too small for a proper pie XD
I found a recipe for gamba's in a hot curry sauce a while back, and I wanted to make that this week. but I forgot where I found it 0.o

I really like pasta alfredo with some slices of pancetta, that is delicious! Do you have any favorite recipes?

one of my favorite pasta's is with creamcheese. (like philadelphia) it is simple and cheap, I fry some smoked bacon, add some mushrooms, put in a packet of creamcheese, salt and pepper and water (about an equal amount to the creamcheese). let it all mix and get nice and hot for a while and that is it. you could also add union. and I like to eat it with cucumber.
